A team of researchers have discovered a new odd-looking fossil with small teeth and stumpy arms likely belonging to the Abelisauridae family of dinosaur which lived in the western desert of Egypt more than 100 million years ago.

The paleontology experts at the Bahariya oasis in the Egyptian western desert have discovered the vertebra bone of a new, unnamed species of dinosaur which belongs to the abelisauridae family.

Egyptian researcher Bilal Salem leads the team and made the discovery. According to the researchers- “The dinosaur is very similar to the famous T-Rex”. They described this new species as bipedal, meaning that it walked using only two. Other characteristic described were that this carnivorous had small teeth and very short arms. It is estimated that this carnivorous was 20 feet long when it was alive, the same size of a school bus. This dinosaur specie travelled though the Sahara Desert in the Cretaceous period (145 to 66 million years ago). This period was the final period for the age of dinosaur.

What researchers think about this discovery?

The researcher Bilal Salem expressed that how scary would it have been to live in Bahariya oasis during its time. Salem research team led a 2016 discovery in the expedition of Bahariya oasis. There they discovered the oldest known abelisauridae specie in the north eastern of Africa. There discoveries show that these meat-eating species lived through the northern part of the continent.

The Bahariya oasis is known for its many fossil discoveries. However, before World War II many were destroyed and the only pictures of them remain in the books. The region is well known for producing the first-known fossils of most prolific dinosaur species. The researcher Salem wants to open a museum to showcase their discoveries.

The recent discoveries show that the region of Bahariya oasis in Egypt holds more of these discoveries which are still undiscovered these discoveries can change our view on the history. The treasures which are still buried hiding the history of these meat-eating animals which were feared in their times standing at the top of the food chain. There new yet undiscovered history. How will it change our view and our understanding of the past?
